Performance and upgrading of a 27-year-old embankment dam
Description
The 48 meter high rockfill Mahabad Dam in Iran has shown excessive displacements since it began operation in 1970. This is evidenced by distortion of the crest and visible cracks. A preliminary dam safety evaluation was conducted using available data from monitoring studies. The data showed that there was a need for additional and more sophisticated monitoring equipment. During the upgrading of the monitoring equipment, additional discoveries of discrepancies were made. The paper describes the history of the behaviour of Mahabad Dam, including the implementation of different remedial measures designed to improve the safety of the dam
