Co-60 irradiation facility

Description

The Co-60 irradiator, a gamma beam 651 PT from Nordion International, Inc. was obtained through a technical assistance from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). A description of the multi-purpose Co-60 irradiation facility and details about the shield building and safety features are presented and discussed. It is a variable dose rate Co-60 irradiator designed for research and pilot-scale studies. Individually operated Co-60 source assemblies are stored in a water-filled pool and are raised by air motors to irradiation position in a shielded room. The products on turntables are exposed to the source at a predetermined time to obtain the desired radiation dose. This batch type irradiator has an initial loading of 1 PB q (30,000 Ci) Co-60. Estimates of the capacity of the irradiator are likewise presented. (Auth.)
