Safety of the nuclear fuel cycle

  • 1. Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe G.m.b.H. (Germany, F.R.). Inst. fuer Heisse Chemie

Description

The Chernobyl reactor accident and the planning and construction of the Wackersdorf reprocessing plant have caused an extreme loss of public acceptance of nuclear energy. The main reason is a deep distrust in its safety. This is also true for safety aspects connected with reprocessing and waste handling and its storage. Therefore this topic has been adopted in a seminar for chemists, physicists and engineers working in this field which took place in March 1987 in Obertraun (Austria) and was organized by the Institut fuer Heisse Chemie of the Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe (KfK) in cooperation with the Nuklearchemie division of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh) and the Verein Oesterreichischer Chemiker (VOeCh). This volume contains twenty-four out of the forty-two papers presented at the seminar for which separate input has been prepared for the data bases INIS and EDB. (orig./RB)
