Environmental sensitivity index mapping of Abu Dhabi (UAE) - a computer based remotely-sensed and field mapping product

A detailed oil spill contingency plan for the coastal area of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi was completed during 1991 and 1992. The study area, shown in Figure 1, covers the entire coastline of the Emirate. As part of the study, environmental sensitivity mapping (ESI) was performed using a combination of remotely-sensed data (Landsat) and conventional ESI field mapping techniques. The resulting ESI map has greater detail and coverage than conventional ESI maps. The product provides improved accessibility to maps of any area of interest at a range of scales, with map updating capabilities. A total of 60 ground stations were established and monitored along the coastline prior to any ESI field mapping along the coast. Monitoring included topographic beach profiles, sediment sampling, beach sketches and photos, oil coverage (if present), littoral processes observations, shallow trenches, and biological observations and sampling. The work was conducted prior to mapping in order to develop the best fit ESI shoreline key 1 to 10, for the Abu Dhabi coastline
