Description
This concept for waste disposal will be used for setting a programme of activities to meet the requirement of the future nuclear science and technology development in Indonesia based on environment safety impact. The program is viable and will be implemented with currently state of the art and proven technology. Based on the programme we can estimate the numbers and discipline of staffing required, the annual budget and the hardware needed for the implementation. The objective of the geochemistry and geochemical research programme is to obtain deeper understanding of the processes that govern the chemical interactions between dissolved radionuclides and the geological formation of the disposal site(s) and to predict the effects of these interactions on the properties of these formation to serve as a the barrier to radionuclide migration. To evaluate the safety and environmental impacts, it is necessary to assess the conceptual waste disposal programme on present and future generation, into two distinct phases so-called a pre-closure phase and post-closure phase. The pre-closure assessment is concerned with transportation of the wastes, the construction, operation and closure of the disposal facility. The post-closure assessment is concerned with the performance of the facility in the long term after the surface facilities are decommissioned and the vault is sealed. (author)
