Description
Sputter-ion pumps are extensively used in ultra high vacuum applications, such as mass spectrometers where hydrocarbon free vacuum is a must. These type o f pumps need high voltage dc power supplies with current limiting provision for its oper ation. Typical ratings are 6.2 KV and 200 mA. A ferroresonant transformer is used in the power supply for current limiting. It is superior to alternate methods of current limi ting. The design equations for the ferroresonant transformer have been derived. Using ferroresonant transformer, a 6.2 KV, 200 mA power supply has been made and tested with IZ 80 sputter-ion pump in mass spectrometer. The performance has been found satisfactory. (author). 7 figs
