On radioactive waste management in reprocessing facilities (1988)

It has been made obligatory that the release of radioactive gaseous waste and that of radioactive liquid waste from the reprocessing facilities at the Tokai Plant of Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation be properly controlled so that it does not exceed the permissible release limits specified in the safety rules for the plant. The present article summarizes the 1988 radiation management reports submitted by Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation, which is engaged in reprocessing, according to the Law Concerning Control of Nuclear Material, Nuclear Fuel and Nuclear Reactor. It also shows data on the release of radioactive waste in and after 1977, when the plant started operating with spent fuel. A study was made to examine the data on the management of radioactive waste in the plant. Results revealed that the release of radioactive gaseous waste and that of radioactive liquid waste from the plant was below the permissible release limits over these years. In 1988, 19.1 tons of spent fuel was reprocessed in the plant. (N.K.)
