Description
The polymers containing phenol groups are very useful in preparing the resins which will be used as ''functional polymers'' such as ion-exchanged polymers, polymer catalysts and etc. In this paper, the grafting of p-vinylphenol and its derivatives have been studied to introduced phenol groups on polymers. The γ-ray irradiation has been used in grafting. Grafting of p-vinylphenol on polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene and polyvinylchloride films was carried out by means of preirradiation in vacuo, preirradiation in air and simultaneous irradiation. But, in range of total dose, 0.5 -- 2 x 106R, the grafting ratios were very small in spite to several trials of post-polymerization. In stead of p-vinylphenol, acetylated vinylphenol which has been prepared from p-vinylphenol by usual acetylation technics has been used for grafting. By preirradiation technics, the grafting ratios have been very small, but by simultaneous irradiation technics, the grafting ratios have been increased according with total dose and about 400% at 1.3 x 106R, and these grafted polymers have been easily changed by hydrolysis to the structure similar to polymer grafted with p-vinylphenol.
