Isotopic analysis for clarifying the origin of artesian groundwater in Central Greece

The origin of artesian ground water, wide-spread in the eastern Sperchios valley/Central Greece, was detected by means of isotope investigations. The present investigation results have been achieved within the framework of the technical cooperation between Greece and the FRG. They are part of a programme of gathering information on the quantities of ground water in the Sperchios valley already utilized and ground water which can still be put to use. In order to come to an estimate of the ground water reserves, not only isotope investigations but also intensive hydrogeological stock-taking, geoelectrical studies, gamma drilling hole logs, pressure increase measurements, and a pumping experiment for large-scale areas for a digital calculation model were made.
