Volumetric modulated arc therapy for prostate cancer - dosimetric planning

Full text: Introduction: For the first time the technique volumetric modulated rotational therapy (VMRT) Rapid arc type has been introduced in Bulgaria. It enables the realization of high doses in the planned target volume and retention of tolerance of the risk organs. Materials and methods: A method of dosimetry planning of prostate cancer with VMRT is presented. The dose is achieved upon rotation of the gantry around the patient ranging 3 parameters of the apparatus - the form of a multi-leaf collimator, the dose rate and the gantry's rotation speed. Results: The necessity of delineation of additional volumes and structures for dosimetry inverse (reversed) planning is considered. The idea of creating of these structures is deeply linked to the nature of this type of planning. With the establishment of the above structures the overlapping of the target volume planned and critical organs will be avoided. The steps that need to be passed to create a qualitative and at the same time feasible dosimetric plan are shown. Conclusion: The planning allows different optimizations in terms of received doses and has different intricacies that need to practice and master in order to achieve optimal results
