Processing-microstructure-mechanical properties relationship in Ce-doped tetragonal zirconia

  • 1. Instituto de Ceramica y Vidrio, CSIC, Electroceramics Department, Arganda del Rey, Madrid (Spain)

Description

The effect of the precipitation procedure on the sinterability of 12Ce-TZP calcined powders has been studied. Mechanical properties of dense 12Ce-TZP ceramics were evaluated. The microhardness and fracture toughness were measured by a microindentation technique and a fracture toughness as high as 19 MN/m3/2 on the best sintered sample could be calculated. No tetragonal-to-monoclinic phase transformation was observed in sintered samples aged at ≥150 degrees C, and an incipient monoclinic phase was observed below that aging temperature
