Nuclear power in Europe in january 2019

The number of reactors operating in Europe is 126 producing 26% of the European electricity. The European Commission has reasserted that renewable energies combined with nuclear energy are the backbone of the European carbon-free energy system. It is also acknowledged that a carbon-free electricity system turns other sectors like transport or household heating into carbon-free sectors. Various states such as Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, France, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom have announced their intention to invest in nuclear energy or keep on using it. It appears that for countries whose energy mix is based on both renewable energy and nuclear energy, their CO₂ releases have decreased while for countries that opted for a mix based on renewable energies and fossil energies their CO₂ releases have increased.
