Hardware improvements on PWR plants to mitigate risks during mid-loop cold shutdown operation

  • 1. Electricite de France, Marseilles (France). Process Dept.

Description

Improved low pressure RCS level control, vortex detection in the RHR system and an automatic reactor coolant make-up system (AMU) have all been recently introduced on PWRs in France to effectively reduce the risk of the loss of RHR cooling and core uncovery during cold shutdowns with primary circuit intervention especially during mid-loop cold shutdown operation. Moreover, these modifications only have positive impact on plant availability. The present paper describes modification implemented on 1,300 MWe plants, knowing that those implemented on 900 MWe plants are quite similar
