Formation of an Al6Mn precipitate in aluminum annealed after implantation with 3.5 atomic percent manganese

Description
Microstructures and manganese composition depth profiles were examined in aluminum after implantation with manganese to a maximum concentration of 3.5 atomic percent and after annealing the implanted samples at 4600C for 4 h. The depth profiles were determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and the microstructure was examined using transmission electron microscopy techniques. An orthorhombic Al6Mn precipitate phase with a specific orientation relationship relative to the matrix was observed for these annealing conditions. This precipitate appears to exhibit several morphologies. The results reported are compared to previous microstructure results for aluminum annealed after implantation with molybdenum to the same maximum concentration level. 15 refs.; 2 figs
