Description

The paper proposes a concept of power driver for industrial thermonuclear reactor based on inertial thermonuclear synthesis (ITS). The circuit is based on the application of free electron laser (FEL) as a energy source for thermonuclear target compression which becomes feasible due to the application of a radically new circuit of FEL-amplifier. In the project under consideration the FEL-based laser system operates on the wave length of 0.5 micrometer. The full energy of laser radiation equals 1 MJ. This energy is delivered to the target in the pulse whose length is controlled within the range of 0.1-2 ns. The laser system brightness is 4 x 1022 W cm-2. The FEL operating pulse repetition frequency is 40 Hz, full efficiency of electricity conversion into the energy of optical radiation is 11%. 9 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs
