Conservative treatment of breast cancer (Stage 1-2)-successful alternative to modified radical mastectomy

Description
Results of treatment of initial stages of the mammary gland cancer (MGC) by mastectomy (M) of the Patey type and conservative treatment (CT) are compared. CT consisted of organopreserving operation and radiotherapy (a part of patients was subjected to chemotherapy before irradiation). Reliable difference in local relapses is revealed: following radical mastectomy their rate is 20.5%, following CT - 4.1%. When assessing delayed metastatic spreading the essential difference between two observed patients groups is not evident, while the tendency to disease dissemination manifested more often is observed after M. Considerable difference in 5-year survival was not found in the groups analysed (95.6 and 91.8 %), marked effect of the age factor and disease stage (1, 2 stages) is not also revealed
Abstract (Russian)
Проведено сравнение результатов лечения начальных стадий рака молочной железы (РМЖ) методом мастэктомии типа Patey (M) и консервативного лечения (КЛ). КЛ состояло из органосохраняющей операции и лучевого лечения (часть больных была подвергнута химиотерапии перед облучением). Выявлена достоверная разница в локальных рецидивах: после радикальной мастэктомии их частота 20,5%, после КЛ - 4,1%. При оценке отдаленного метастазирования между двумя наблюдаемыми группами пациентов не обнаруживается существенного различия (4,9% и 11,7%), но наблюдается тенденция к чаще проявляющейся диссеминации заболевания после М. Значительной разницы в 5-летней выживаемости в анализируемых группах не обнаружено (95,6% и 91,8%), не выявлено также заметного влияния фактора возраста и стадии заболевания (1, 2 стадий)Additional details
