Austenitic stainless steel alloys having improved resistance to fast neutron-induced swelling
Description
An alloy suitable for use as cladding for nuclear fuel elements intended for use in fast neutron environments is described. The alloy is a type 316 austenitic stainlesssteel consisting of 5-22% chromium, 8-30% nickel, and the balance iron, with void-depressing concentrations of silicon (0.7-2.7%) and titanium (0.1-0.5%) added. The fuels used with this cladding may be oxides, nitrides, or carbides of uranium, or mixtures of uranium oxide, carbide or nitride wth oxides, nitrides, or carbides of plutonium or thorium. (L.L.)
