Experimental research into the flow through a slotted channel. 2

Description

Results from an experimental investigation into the flow of a liquid metal through a channel with nonconducting walls of rectangular cross section with a high aspect ratio were previously presented for coplanar and inclined magnetic fields. In the present study, the authors discuss the results of experiments on the transition to a Stokes flow regime within such a channel under the action of a nonuniform inclined magnetic field (θ = 45-90 degrees). The experimental data on the conditions for transition are generalized with good accuracy by a linear relationship. The uniqueness of the flow in a nonuniform field at θ = 45 degrees is apparently associated with the interaction of the shearing layers at the corners of the channel, although this question requires further study. 5 refs., 6 figs
