Description
Radioactive liquid wastes generated during the reprocessing of thoria fuel are not like urania based HLW (High Level Waste) streams. Thoria based fuels J-rods, were irradiated in CIRUS research reactor as a research campaign and reprocessed for 233Uranium and thorium separation (UTSF) at Trombay. These studies were taken up to generate basic data for thoria based HLW for its application in AHWR fuel reprocessing. Thorex process was used after dissolution of thoria rods. The reprocessing of irradiated thoria fuel rods from power reactors is PRTRF waste
