Number and species diversity of protected trees in Slovakia are classified by districts and regions. The protected trees were designated in the sense of the Guideline of the Ministry of Environment of the SR No. 4/1999-4.1 pursuing par. 34 of the Act of the National Council of the SR No. 287/1994 of Coll. on nature and landscape protection. Trees, which grow in parks, gardens, and in the not settled landscape and reach extra dimensions (height, circumference of trunk) and/or age are classified in this category. Special limits are established for every wood species. In Slovakia 466 localities with occurrence of protected trees (single or in groups) with the total number of 1,280 trees representing 66 species are registered. Trees are continuously searched for and documented. The data were provided by the State Administration of Nature Protection of the SR, Banska Bystrica (Situation in 1999). Flora Slovakia, thanks to its climatic (fading out oceanic effect and the onset of continentality) and orographic conditions, boasts large diversity of flora. Pannonian and the proper Carpathian flora, as well as the Alpine or Mediterranean elements are to be found here. Presented plant species were selected by application of various criteria. The degree of cartographic processing of every taxon was taken into account in order to reflect its distribution in Slovakia in the most complete way. The above-mentioned plant species represent a wide spectre of different forms (starting from the annual and ending by the perennial herbs and wood species) growing in different types of biotopes (fields, vineyards, ruderal sites, sand dunes, stationary waters, steppe hillsides, rock and debris sites, in broad-leaved and coniferous forests, and sub-alpine or alpine meadows, from lowlands to the high-mountain vetegational zones. For better orientation, the individual species were classified into categories.
