Radioactive Britain
Description
The danger from non-nuclear, but radioactive, sites in Britain is highlighted. The radioactivity can come from radioactive stack emission, such as polonium-210 from a lead smelting works, (which is authorised, but considered in this article to be excessive) or from soil contamination, for example a disused chemical factory. Concern is expressed over one such site in Essex where children play and which has received permission for development for housing. Another site mentioned is contaminated with radium from a dial illumination process used in the second world war. Contaminated soil from this site has been moved to the Drigg site and to a local waste tip where children play. (U.K.)
