History of iodine, from past to present

Description

Although only present in trace amounts in the human body, iodine is a natural chemical element essential to the proper functioning of our organism at all stages of life. Discovered in 1811 by a Frenchman, Bertrand Courtois, this trace element is a component of thyroid hormones, which help control major vital functions. In both humans and animals, its deficiency, as well as excessive intake, can have major repercussions - goiter, dysthyroidism, cognitive impairment - or even irreversible effects, particularly during pregnancy and lactation - dwarfism, cretinism and miscarriage. Although references to these 'goitrous monsters' and their first treatments date back to pre-Christian times, it was only several thousand years later, with the birth of modern medicine, that the first universal iodine prevention programs appeared. Although these programs have made a significant contribution to reducing iodine deficiency, which has become a genuine public health problem, over 2 billion people worldwide are still affected by iodine deficiency today. As knowledge of iodine has evolved, its applications in modern medicine have gradually multiplied. Thanks to its remarkable properties, iodine is now used in a wide range of medical and industrial fields, which it is essential to master in order to mitigate the risks associated with its use

Abstract (French)

Bien qu'il soit seulement present a l'etat de trace dans le corps humain, l'iode est un element chimique naturel essentiel au bon fonctionnement de notre organisme a tous les stades de la vie. Decouvert en 1811 par un francais, Bertrand Courtois, cet oligo-element entre dans la composition des hormones thyroidiennes qui participent au controle des grandes fonctions vitales. Chez l'homme comme chez l'animal, sa carence, comme son apport excessif, peuvent avoir des repercussions majeures - goitre, dysthyroidies, amoindrissement des facultes cognitives -voire irreversibles, notamment pendant la grossesse et l'allaitement - nanisme, cretinisme et fausses couches. Si l'on retrouve des references a ces 'goitreux monstrueux', et a leurs premiers traitements, datant d'avant J-C, c'est seulement plusieurs milliers d'annees plus tard avec la naissance de la medecine moderne qu'apparaissent les premiers programmes universels de prevention par l'iode. Meme si ces programmes ont largement contribue a faire reculer une carence iodee devenue un veritable probleme de sante publique, plus de 2 milliards d'individus dans la population mondiale sont a l'heure actuelle encore concernes A mesure que la connaissance sur l'iode evoluait, parfois controversees, ses applications en medecine moderne se sont petit a petit multipliees. L'element, par ses proprietes remarquables, trouve aujourd'hui sa place dans de nombreux domaines medicaux et industriels qu'il parait essentiel de maitriser pour palier d'eventuels mesusages.
