Mapping trade networks using transaction-level data

Description

• A network approach to visualizing transaction-level trade data can be used to improve the quality of analysis of international trade in safeguards-relevant goods. The paper outlines how such trade data can be restructured for network analysis, with a new method to map out trade networks. • De-identified trade network graphs as examples of the approach, which can show the emerging roles of different firms across and within countries, the relative importance of different roles, trends in trade of different types of goods, and how trade in different commodities might be linked through related firms.
