Description

The irradiation damage of δ-ferrite in 308L stainless steel weld metal was studied by using transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. Neither void nor dislocation loop was found in δ-ferrite following irradiation while G-phase precipitation and enhanced spinodal decomposition were observed. With the increased irradiation dose from 0.5 dpa to 3 dpa, the coarsening of G-phase occurred, followed by an obvious inverse coarsening of G-phase. The inverse coarsening of G-phase was associated with the irradiation recoil effect. Spinodal decomposition of δ-ferrite was found in the unirradiated specimen due to the thermal effect during post-welding heat treatment, generating Fe-rich α phase and Cr-rich αʹ phase. Following irradiation, spinodal decomposition was enhanced. (authors)
