Spent resin sampling with ALARA and cost saving considerations

  • 1. Presgrove Technology, Evans, GA (United States)

Description

A spent resin sample devise was designed to meet the NRC Reg Guide 1.21 requirement for a representative sample and was subsequently patented (Patent 4987784). Since then, variations to the original design have been incorporated which perform three additional functions. First, after having obtained the representative sample of the resin, the system using a multi-channel analyzer provides the isotopic analysis of the collected sample without transporting the sample to a lab. Next, it transfers the sample to a site glass to measure the volume of the sample which will support the 10 CFR 61 scaling calculation. Finally, the system transfers the sample through flex hose to the shipping cask for disposal. The system provides the 'representative' sample of the entire volume of the shipment then applies the ALARA concept by analyzing, measuring and transferring the sample to the shipping cask with minimal dose to operators
