Lifetime of the metastable state of singly ionized helium

Description

The natural lifetime of the 2S state of He+ has been measured in a decay-in-flight experiment. The result, tau/sub 2S/ = 1.928 (+0.060) msec, is in agreement with the value of 1.899 msec predicted by the theory of two-photon decay. The agreement between experiment and theory implies an upper limit of /delta/ less than or equal to 4.0 x 10-5 for 2S-2P parity mixing in helium ions
