Prediction of metallic glass formation by ion mixing

Description

A brief review is presented to compare the current predictions with the experimental results of the metallic glass formation by ion mixing in 54 binary metal systems so far studied. Two characteristic parameters, i.e. the maximum possible amorphization range closely related to the solid solubilities and the heat of formation of the system, were found to be important in determining the readiness of glass formation. A map was constructed using these parameters as coordinates, and some empirical qualifications were found for classifying the metal systems into three categories of readily, possible and hardly glass forming systems. 36 refs
