Description

This paper reports on development of the Plasma Beam Ion Source, a high brilliance ion source, designed to supply large ion currents at low beam energies as required for RFQ injection. It consists of a duoplasmatron followed by two further discharge chambers where the plasma generated in the duoplasmatron is further compressed by an inhomogeneous solenoidal field. The beam is extracted with a high voltage ratio extraction system which leads to beam perveances up to 60 x 10-8 A/V3/2. With hydrogen operation a proton fraction > 90% can be obtained. The source is used for injection into the Institutes Four-Rod-Split-Coaxial RFQ and for the experiments with coupled RFQ's
