Construction of the Sellafield thermal oxide nuclear fuel reprocessing plant
Description
This paper reports that a new spent thermal oxide fuel reprocessing plant (THORP) is being constructed on the north-west coast of England, Europe. The plant has been designed as a self-contained island site with a throughput rate of 1200 tonnes of spent fuel per year. Fuel receipt, interim storage, shearing, dissolution and chemical separation will be carried out in three interconnected buildings covering an area 270 metres by 126 metres. Active waste from the process will be transferred to centralized encapsulation or further treatment plants located within the Sellafield site
