Compensation of industrial load variation with superconducting magnetic energy storage

Installing the superconducting magnet energy storage (SMES) by industrial loads, the power flow variation caused by them in utility network can be compensated. Such system is studied to improve the quality of the power distributed through the point of common connection by the customers. Daily pattern of the load variation in the typical industrial systems are investigated to obtain basic requirements for the compensating systems. The storage capacity of 0.3-2 Mwh is considered to be enough to regulate short-term load variation in industrial network. Then an integrated compensation system is proposed and its control scheme is studied. The system consists of the SMES, the synchronous phase modifier and the active power filter. Its conceptional design is carried out. It is shown with simulational studies against load variation in some industrial plants, that the whole system can compensate the effect of variable industrial load without disturbances to the power supplying network
