Description
The extraction of mercury(II) with diphenyl-2-pyridylmethane (DPPM) in benzene has been investigated from sulphuric acid solutions containing thiocyanate ions. The variables affecting the extraction have been examined. Quantitative extraction of mercury is accomplished in a single equilibration from 1M sulphuric acid solution containing 0.02M potassium thiocyanate with 0.025M DPPM. Thiosulphate ions drastically influence the extraction. Decontamination data suggest that mercury can be separated from a variety of other elements. The metal can be stripped into 10M nitric or hydrochloric acid solution. (author)
