The development of fusion technology in the United States is reviewed with reference to the confinement of plasmas, heating of plasmas, impurities in plasmas, diagnostics for plasmas, and magnetics for fusion power. Other problems discussed include: materials for fusion power, plasma engineering, environmental and safety aspects of fusion, and, finally, the maintainability of fusion plants
