Primary systems integrity of CANDU nuclear generating stations
Description
This paper provides an overview of the work done to ensure the structural integrity of the primary system of CANDU nuclear generating stations designed, built, and operated by Ontario Hydro. The paper starts with a description of CANDU nuclear generating station typical of Ontario Hydro's Nuclear power facilities. The major differences from a typical Pressurized Water Reactor are highlighted. The codes and standards applicable for the design of primary reactor coolant system are described, along with the various jurisdictions responsible for licensing of nuclear generating stations in Canada. The paper concludes with a review of the precautions taken to ensure the pressure boundary integrity, during construction and operation of the station and a brief overview of the research being performed in the area of pressure boundary integrity.
