Dose economy in radiodiagnosis. Present technical possibilities and development of normalisation

Description

Some aspects of the contribution of technological progress to dose saving are examined first. For radiography on film a new generation of intensifying screens is now available, with rare earths incorporated either as new luminophores or as activators of the layer. This can increase the speed of the screens by a factor of more than 5. In practice a compromise must be found at values under 5 to avoid the appearance of quantic noise on the radiograph, but dividing the dose by two, three or four without deterioration of the image is already a very appreciable result. Moreover the use of the luminance amplifier tube offers an approach to photographic radiology techniques, remarkable for their small dose consumption. Finally such devices as automatic exposers, memory storage of parameters, anatomical programming are likely to avoid certain human errors leading to failed shots

Abstract (French)

On examine d'abord quelques aspects de la contribution des progres technologiques dans le domaine de l'economie de doses. Pour la radiographie sur film, on dispose d'une nouvelle generation d'ecrans renforcateurs, dans la fabrication desquels on a introduit des terres rares, soit comme nouveaux luminophores, soit comme activateurs de la couche. On parvient ainsi a augmenter la rapidite des ecrans d'un facteur pouvant depasser 5. En pratique ont est amene a rechercher un compromis a des valeurs inferieures a 5 pour eviter l'apparition de bruit quantique sur la radiographie, mais la division de la dose par deux, trois ou quatre sans deterioration d'image constitue deja un resultat tres appreciable. Par ailleurs, l'utilisation du tube amplificateur de luminance permet l'acces a plusieurs techniques de prises de vues radiologiques, remarquables par les consommation reduite en dose: enfin, des dispositifs tels que: exposeurs automatiques, memorisation des parametres, programmation anatomique, sont susceptibles d'eviter un certain nombre d'erreurs humaines conduisant a des 'cliches rates'
