Binding properties of compositions of CaO-Al2O3-ZrO2

  • 1. Khar'kovskij Politekhnicheskij Inst. (Ukrainian SSR)

Description

The binding properties of CaO-Al2O3-ZrO2 systems are studied. The majority of compositions possess high hydraulic activity. Compositions in the region CaAl2O4-CaZrO3-Ca7Al6ZrO18 (AZC) exhibit high mechanical strength and monomineral cements CaAl2O4(Ca) and Ca7Al6ZrO18 (C7A3Z) are characterized by lower strength than the cement containing these minerals and hydraulically inert mineral CaZrO3(CZ). The hydraulic activity of the cement consisting of C7A3Z and CZ is especially high. The increase of strength of the AZC cement is due to enrichment of hardening products with zirconium hydroxide formed during hydration of CZ and to reduction of the rate of cement hydration in the presence of CZ. Hexagonal hydroaluminates CAH10 and C2AH8 have been identified in products of AZC hydration by X-ray, microscopic and differential thermal analyses
