Considerations about the apparent 'superluminal expansions' in astrophysics

Description

The orthodox models devised to explain the apparent 'superluminal expansions' observed in astrophysics - and here briefly summarized and discussed together with the experimental data - do not seem to be too much succesful. Especially when confronted with the most recent observations, suggesting complicated expansion patterns, even with possible accelerations. At this point it may be, therefore, of some interest to explore the possible alternative models in which actual Superluminal motions take place. The ground is prepared starting from a variational principle, introducing the elements of a tachyon mechanics within special relativity, and arguing about the expected behaviour of tachyonic objects when interacting (gravitationally, for instance) among themselves or with ordinary matter. Then the simplest 'Superluminal models' are reviewed and developed, paying particular attention to the observations which they would give rise to. Itis concluded that some of them appear to be physically acceptable and are statistically favoured with respect to the orthodox ones. (Author)

Os modelos ortodoxos inventados para explicar as 'expansoes superluminais' aparentes observadas na astrofisica e brevemente resumidos e discutidos aqui junto com os dados experimentais - nao parecem ter tanto sucesso. Especialmente quando confrontados com as observacoes mais recentes, sugerindo modelos de expansoes complicados, mesmo com possiveis aceleracoes. Nesse ponto talvez seja, portanto, de algum interesse explorar os modelos alternativos possiveis nos quais os movimentos superluminais atuais sao levados em conta. Prepara-se a base partindo de um principio variacional, introduzindo os elementos de um mecanismo de taquions dentro da relatividade especial e arguindo sobre o comportamento esperado dos objetos taquionicos quando interagindo (gravitacionalmente, por exemplo) entre eles ou com a materia comum. Entao, reveem-se e desemvolvem-se os 'modelos superluminais' mais simples, dando atencao particular as observacoes que deveriam dar surgimento a eles. Conclui-se que alguns deles parecem ser fisicamente aceitaveis e sao estatisticamente favorecidos em relacao aos ortodoxos. (L.C.)
