  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Tokai, Ibaraki. Tokai Research Establishment

Description

For the developement of new safe and economical nuclear breeding system, the molten-fluoride technology has been applied to the combined system of Accelerator Molten-Salt Breeder (AMSB) and Molten-Salt Converter Reactor (MSCR ), which will substantially promote the utilization of thorium resources. AMSB is composed of an 1 GeV proton accelerator and a molten-fluoride target system producing fissile materials by the spallation reactions of heavy nuclei with high energy protons. The following items have been explained and discussed: brief description of general system, the selection of target salts suitable to AMSB target and their physical properties, the fuel cycle (material flow) and predicted performance in the combined system, and a list of main technological problems in its R D.Some important technological problems will be examined in the followind reports and a ''poster''. Finally a new type accelerator appropriate to our purpose has been proposed as an alternative to ''linac''. (author)
