RETRAN analyses in support of steam safety valve reduction for Oyster Creek

  • 1. GPU Nuclear Corp., Parsippany, NJ (United States)

Description

GPU Nuclear Corporation (GPUN) recently received Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval for a Technical Specification change that allowed removal of 7 out of 16 main steam safety valves (MSSVs) at Oyster Creek (OC). The change resulted from taking credit for high neutron flux scram as per the current version of the American Society of Mechanical Engineer's (ASME) code and performing RETRAN analyses to demonstrate adequate overpressure protection. The reduction in valves will reduce maintenance costs and worker radiation exposure. It will also decrease the likelihood of inadvertent valve opening or leakage
