Description
The French policy in the management of irradiated fuel consists of reprocessing with a dual goal: recover energy bearing materials U and Pu and limit the volume and especially the toxicity of wastes to be disposed in geological sites. To improve the present reprocessing at the La Hague UP3 and UP2 plants CEA launched the SPIN program (separation and transmutation) aiming at reducing the volume of waste from reprocessing from 1.5 m3 to 0.5 m3 per ton of reprocessed heavy metal and the separation and transmutation of long lived elements, thus reducing waste toxicity by a factor of 100 compared to direct disposal then by 1000 within 20 and 30 years. 3 refs., 5 tabs
