Forsmark NPP OSART and WANO Experience

  • 1. Forsmark Kraftgrupp AB, Forsmark (Sweden)
  • 2. Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant, Forsmark (Sweden)

Description

Forsmark NPP is an affiliated company to Vattenfall AB, one of the major electricity companies in Europe. The power plant is situated on the Swedish east coast, about 140 km north of Stockholm, the capitol of Sweden. The plant has three BWR units of 984, 1120 and 1170 MWe net electrical output. All three units are of ASEA-ATOM (today Westinghouse Electric) design. Unit 1 and 2 are sister units. The difference in electrical output is due to a resent power uprate at unit 2. Unit 3 is of a newer design and already from the beginning slightly larger than units 1 and 2. All three units have attributes of an advanced BWR, i.e. internal main circulation pumps and fine motion control rod manoeuvre capability. The units were taken into commercial operation 1980, 1981 and 1985. The operating history of all three units is comparable to the best quartile of all BWRs. During the last 30 years Forsmark NPP has experienced two OSART missions. The first took place in March 1988 and the second 20 years later, in February 2008 with a follow-up in November 2009. It is the experiences from the OSART 2008/2009 which is presented in this paper. Forsmark has also experienced two WANO Peer reviews, one in 2004 and a second in November 2011 with a follow-up in November 2013. A comprehensive comparison of experiences from OSART and WANO Peer reviews is also included in this paper. Forsmark NPP has benefited a lot from OSART and WANO Peer reviews and in our opinion are OSART and WANO Peer reviews complementary. Forsmark welcomes future missions from both organisations. This paper is an updated version of a presentation made at the Technical Meeting on the Evolution of the OSART Services over the last 30 Years in Busan, Republic of Republic of Korea, 29 October-1 November 2013.
