Supercollider physics
Description
An attempt is made to clarify the current knowledge and future possibilities in the field of supercollider physics, mainly by citing a previous article by the author and coworkers and the many workshops on supercollider physics held during the past year. Considerations are made over parton distributions, QCD jets, electroweak physics and heavy Higgs bosons, on the basis of various culculated results. Parton distribution is discussed in terms of uncertainties concerning the input, the treatment of heavy flavors, and QCD perturbation theory. QCD jets are discussed based on the calculated inclusive cross section for jet production in anti pp collisions, invariant mass distribution of two jets, and transverse energy. For electroweak physics, some results including the integrated cross sections for W+ and W- production, rapidity distribution for W+ production and Feynman diagrams are shown and discussed. Concerning heavy Higgs bosons, comparisons of expected signal and background are carried out. On the basis of these considerations, the author reaches the conviction that a high-luminosity multi-TeV hadron collider will meet the objective of exploring the TeV energy scale and illustrating the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking. Some areas in which further work is required are also described. (Nogami, K.)
