The type Ib supernova 1984L in NGC 991

Description
Photometry from about 380 to about 520 days past maximum and spectroscopy at about 400 days past maximum were obtained for the type Ib SN 1984L. The late-time light curve is characterized by an exponential decline with an e-folding time of about 116 days, and it is dominated by forbidden O-I 6300-6363-A emission. If the observed flux is due to the radioactive decay of Co-56, the results imply an initial Ni-56 mass of about 0.1 solar masses. The required oxygen mass (about 1 solar mass) and the derived ratios of Mg/O and Mg/C suggest that this Ib SN Ib originated in a star of about 20 solar masses. Comparisons are made with the type II SN 1980K and SN 1987A, the type Ib SN 1985F and SN 1987K, and models. 66 refs
