Corrosion resistance of ingots and rolled sheets of magnesium-lithium IMB 2 and VMD5 alloys

Description

The objects of investigations were, first, the properties of ingots and deformed semi-fabricates of IMV2 and VMD5 alloys manufactured industrially, and, second, the effect of manganese, and sodium and potassium impurities upon their corrosion resistance. The investigations have indicated that the corrosion resistance of ingots and rolled sheets of the IMV2 alloy tested in a 3% solution of sodium chloride and in a moist atmosphere conditioned by atomized 0.001% sodium chloride is somewhat higher than that of ones of the VMD5 alloys, and is close to the corrosion resistance of a standard alloy. The corrosion resistance of IMV2 and VMD5 alloys is substantially affected by the content therein of manganese and sodium and potassium impurities. Sheets of IMV2 and VMD5 alloys are not affected by corrosion cracking in testing by the specified deformation technique
