Hydraulic characteristics of Flow Assisted Ram Extension

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Reactor Safety Div.

Description

A new refueling mode which utilizes the fluid forces in a fuel channel, is envisaged for the Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors in India. This mode is denominated as flow assisted refueling in contrast to the current machine assisted refueling. For refueling the low flow channels, the proposed mode entails the use of a special device called Flow Assisted Ram Extension (FARE). The FARE has been conceived as a variable area device to make it suitable for different coolant channels. This paper presents and discusses the results of a parametric study which is pertinent to deriving the optimal hydraulic characteristics of the FARE
