Saturated column leach studies: Hanford 216-Z-1A sediment

  • 1. Rockwell International Corp., Richland, WA (USA). Rockwell Hanford Operations

Description

The leachability of Pu and Am in a sediment obtained from a retired underground liquid waste disposal facility was studied under saturated column and batch leaching conditions. Results from batch leaching studies confirm that Am concentrations are a function of the dissolution of an Am compound having pH-dependent solubility. Batch studies also show Pu is not present as PuO2. The concentration of Am and Pu in the leachate can be enhanced when column leaching conditions favour increased concentrations of complexing agents at the wetting front. (author)
