Description
Radioluminescence (RL) and thermoluminescence (TL) properties of natural quartz samples were compared at several temperatures. Single crystal quartz exhibiting blue-TL (BTL) showed violet-RL (V-RL) and blue-RL (B-RL), both rapidly decreasing to low-intensity levels with X-ray irradiation time. In contrast, volcanic quartz exhibiting red-TL (RTL) showed V-RL and red-RL (R-RL), respectively, decreasing similarly and gradually increasing to saturation values. Thus, RL and TL were identical in the violet, blue and red regions, proposing deep relations on generation/recombination of hole centers between RL and TL in each emission band. Especially, the remnant intensity level of the B-RL after long irradiation time increased with an increase of the sample temperature. Additionally, the irradiation time-response of the B-RL intensity at room temperature was complement to the BTL's above room temperature. From these results, it was suggested that B-RL had recombination centers limited in population jointly with BTL
