The superconducting magnet components of the large acceptance QQD spectrometer ALADN

Description

At the GSI Accelerator Laboratory a design study on a magnetic spectrometer system for the investigation of projectile fragmentation and nuclear reactions in inverse kinematics is under way. This system will be generally suited for experiments in which nuclear fragments and particles must be selected according to their magnetic rigidity. It consists of independent elements for focussing (two superconducting quadrupole magnets) and momentum analysis (one superconducting dipole magnet as its major component). The considerations about the quadrupole magnets leads to a Panofsky-type with a large rectangular acceptance (0.45 x 0.20 m/sup 2/) and a high focussing strength (15 T/m). The resolution of the dipole element depends on a C-magnet, enlargeable to a H-magnet, with a particle gap h/sub gap/ = 0.5 and a high bending power ∫Bdl - 4.5 Tm, respectively 6 Tm. The design study of the dipole magnet will be finished in autumn 1987. Provided that the proposal of the spectrometer system ALAD N will be accepted the choice of the manufacturer will be done immediately. This paper gives a short description of the dipole element
