New volumetric technique for calibrating neutron probes

Description
Studies in laboratory conditions were carried out to determine neutron calibration curves. Soils were packer in barrels to attain values of bulk density similar to those in the field. A mariotte reservoir supplies water to the barels in a way that keeps a water table of 10 cm. A water flow is established from this saturated region to the top of the barrel. The water depth is correlated to the numerical integration of the count rate with depth during the process of capillary tise. The coefficient of determination was 0.999. The calibration curve was independent of the initial misture contents of the soil profile. (author)
Abstract (Portuguese)
Foram conduzidos estudos em laboratorio para determinacao da curva de calibracao de uma sonda de neutrons, em solo ALUVIAL a partir de tres diferentes niveis de umidade inicial, 6,9; 12,4 e 18,1%. O solo foi acondicionado em toneis e compactado ate atingir valores de densidade global proximos aos encontrados em condicoes de campo. Recipientes de alimentacao do tipo Mariotte foram acoplados a cada um deles para manter o lencol freatico de 10 cm da base. Um fluxo de agua e entao estabelecido dessa regiao saturada para superficie do solo. Correlacionando-se as laminas de agua com a integracao das contagens ao longo do perfil de solo obteve-se a declividade e a inteseccao com a origem da reta de calibracao. O coeficiente de determinacao foi de 0,996. A reta de calibracao mostrou-se independente do teor de umidade inicial, enquanto a alimentacao por baixa eliminou problemas constatados, quando da alimentacao por gravidade.
