Procedure of manufacturing sintered nuclear fuel pellets
Description
Pellets are made by pressing and sintering UO2 powder containing 1 to 20 weight per cent Gd2O3 and possibly up to 20 weight per cent U3O8. Part of Gd2O3 is monoclinic which can be made by heat treatment of cubic Gd2O3 at minimum 1250 deg C. Good homogeneity of the solid solution in the UO2 structure is secured in this way. Best results are obtained when sintering at 1750 deg C and at a partial oxygen pressure above 10-7 atm
