Large mass electron-neutrino pairs in UA2

  • 1. CEA Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Saclay, 91 - Gif-sur-Yvette (France)

Description

The production of electrons with very high transverse momentum has been studied in the UA2 experiment at the CERN PP-bar collider (√s = 540 GeV). From a sample of events containing an electron candidate with Psub(T) > 15 GeV/c, a clear signal is extracted, resulting from the production of the charged intermediate vector boson W+-, which subsequently decays into an electron and a neutrino. Events are also observed in which the electron-''neutrino'' pair is produced in association with hard jets; their interpretation in terms of W production via known processes looks unlikely. (author)
